Frequently Asked Questions

Is Leaseswap free?

Leaseswap has a free tier and a Pro plan. Searching, browsing, and saving listings is always free.

Free includes 1 alert with email notifications every 6 hours, unlimited saved listings, and access to our Guess the Rent game and rent price data.

Pro ($14/month or $79/year) unlocks unlimited alerts, instant notifications, AI-powered Deal Scores, and building violation and landlord data.

What do I get with Leaseswap Pro?
  • Unlimited alerts — create as many saved searches as you need
  • Instant notifications — get emailed the moment a new listing matches, instead of every 6 hours
  • Deal Scores — AI-generated scores that rate every listing on space, condition, light, amenities, location, and noise level
  • Building violations & landlord info — see HPD violations and landlord details before you sign
How do I set up an alert?

Setting up an alert takes about 30 seconds:

  1. Click “New Alert” from the Alerts page or the Search page
  2. Describe what you're looking for in plain English (e.g. “2BR in Williamsburg under $3,500” or “pet-friendly with in-unit laundry”)
  3. Review the filters we extract and tweak anything you like
  4. Sign in or create an account (magic link, Google, or Apple — no password needed)

You'll get an email whenever new listings match your criteria.

Why can't I create more alerts?

Free accounts are limited to 1 alert. To create unlimited alerts and get instant notifications, upgrade to Leaseswap Pro. You can still edit or delete your existing alert at any time.

How do I manage my alerts?

Visit the Alerts page to view all your active alerts. You can toggle alerts on and off, edit search criteria, or delete alerts you no longer need.

How do I search by commute time?

Leaseswap offers two ways to filter by location and commute:

  • Commute to an address — enter your office or any destination, set a max travel time, and choose transit, walking, biking, or driving. We calculate real travel-time zones to show only apartments within range.
  • Proximity to places — filter by walking distance to a subway, grocery store, gym, park, cafe, and more. You can even search for specific spots like “Whole Foods” or “Equinox.”

Both options are in the Proximity section of the search filters, and you can combine them.

How can I find rent-controlled apartments?

We have two separate filters in the search panel:

  • Rent Stabilized (Claimed) — the listing itself claims to be rent stabilized
  • Rent Controlled (Verified) — the building appears on the NYS DHCR rent-controlled list

You can also read our in-depth guide on finding rent-stabilized apartments in NYC.

Where does Leaseswap get its listings?

We aggregate listings from multiple NYC rental sources including StreetEasy, Leasebreak, NYBits, and the r/NYCapartments subreddit. Our scrapers run daily to keep results fresh.

Every listing is then enriched with AI-generated insights — deal scores, scam risk flags, building violations, and more — so you can make more informed decisions.

What are Deal Scores?

Deal Scores are an AI-powered rating that helps you spot great apartments at a glance. Each listing is scored on six dimensions: space, condition, natural light, amenities, location, and noise level.

The final score also factors in how the price compares to the neighborhood median, how recently the listing was posted, and scam risk signals. Browse the top-rated listings on the Deals page. Deal Scores are a Pro feature.

Can I save listings to view later?

Yes! Click the heart icon on any listing to save it. You can add personal notes to any saved listing and access them all from your Saved Listings page. Saving listings is free and unlimited on all plans.

Can I find lease takeovers or sublets?

Yes. We source lease takeovers and sublets from Leasebreak and Reddit in addition to traditional rental listings. Use the “Lease Takeover” or “Sublet” filters in the search panel to narrow your results. You can also read our guide to lease takeovers in NYC.

What is the NYC Rent Price Hub?

The Rent Price Hub shows median rent prices across NYC neighborhoods, broken down by bedroom count and borough. It's updated weekly from real listing data and is completely free to use.

What is "Guess the Rent"?

Guess the Rent is a free daily game where you try to guess the rent of 3 real NYC apartments. It's a fun way to sharpen your sense of the market. Play today's challenge at /guess and check out the leaderboard to see how you stack up.

How do I sign in?

You can sign in with a magic link (enter your email and click the link we send), or use Google or Apple. No passwords needed. Visit the login page to get started.

How do I cancel my Pro subscription?

Go to Settings and click “Manage Subscription” in the Subscription section. This opens Stripe's billing portal where you can cancel, update your payment method, or switch plans. Your Pro features stay active until the end of the current billing period.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings and scroll to the Danger Zone section. Click “Delete Account” and confirm by typing DELETE. This permanently removes all your data including alerts, saved listings, and profile information.
